As part of the annual ‘Commonage’ festival held in Callan, Co. Kilkenny, Downes Associates assisted Architects TM (Tom Maher & Eamon Peregrine) with their @Gardner’s World’ installation project. The structure is made up of slotted plywood sheets, no mechanical or glued joints are provided.
Downes Associates have moved from Unit 11 to Unit 7 of Cashel Business Centre. Our new office is located to the rear of the complex (last door on the right) and is situated on the first floor.
The code for our office at the front gate of the complex is "116B".
Downes Associates have recently been appointed as civil and structural engineering consultant for the construction of a new primary school at Lismullin, Co. Meath.
The Department of Education and Skills’ Planning and Building Unit is now developing low-energy educational buildings with the help of the generic repeat design (GRD) type school. This is a programme delivering many primary schools. To minimise risk on so many projects, it brings together proven-in-use technologies. It is significant because of the practical simplicity of its low energy design and repeatability on sites with varied orientations.
Existing School
The site for the new Lismullin NS is currently occupied by a single storey school constructed in 1956 along with a number of temporary prefabricated classroom units and associated car parking, vehicle drop-off, play areas and underground services.
Proposed Site Layout
It is proposed to develop the site for the construction of a new two-storey generic repeat design (GRD) 16 Classroom School with associated car parking, vehicle drop-off, play areas and underground services.

Downes Associates will be participating in Engineers Week 2011. Engineers Week is a campaign held annually by Engineers Ireland to promote engineering as a career and the importance of the profession to Ireland. The week runs from February 14th to 20th with a different theme every day. On Wednesday 16th Open Day will see some of Ireland’s largest engineering employers throw open their doors and welcome the public in to learn more about the vital role engineers play in their local community.
Volunteer Day on Thursday 17th February will be Engineers Ireland’s second national volunteer day and is a key day in Engineers Week 2011. On that day, it is planned that volunteer engineers, with the co-operation of their employers and local schools, will enter classes across the country and speak with students to improve their knowledge and appreciation of maths as well as tell them about the benefits of a career in engineering.
Downes Associates are delighted to announce the launch of their new website. A number of new features have been added to the website including details of Design Approach, Quality Assurance and CPD systems and added content regarding project experience.
